Is there a program available that will check your computer to determine if
updated versions of installed programs are available?

Assuming you have a standalone PC or small home network, these are the
options I know about. I would start with #1 and #5. Perhaps one day
someone will write a nice script that checks several sites for updates
based on what is installed. Between PAD and DIZ files and Windows
this should be getting easier all the time.

1. Windows Update - included with Windows.

2. Daisy - afree cross check on Windows Update but about 1 release
behind.

3. VersionTracker - PC World (US) has a 90 day trial subscription.
I've never used it so I don't know how much it goes beyond what is
actually archived there. AKA WindowsTracker and TechTracker.

4. At least one other archive site offered something like
VersionTracker (maybe rebranded?) if you joined($) but I don't
remember which one. I think it only covered applications in its
archive.

Some patch management vendors allow home or small network users to use
their software for free, but the databases are mostly checking for
products from MS (e.g., Windows, IE, SQLServer, Office) and sometimes
other large commercial vendors.

5. BigFix - mostly OS related now except for a few PC brands. Free.

6. HFNETCHK - free for <50 PCs IIRC.

A few other useful utilities:

7. Belarc - free Belarc Advisor profiles your PC, including most
installed products (and will help manage PCs for $)

8. aida32 - includes software profile. Free.

9. SANDRA - may include software profile in free modules.

Please let us know if you find anything else of interest.
