Something odd has just started happening. When I click on a program tab such
as file, view, tools etc the program freezes and will not be forced to
close. Does anybody know what to do please?

You forgot to tell us the name/version of the program that is being frozen.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Sorry, yes the programs so far are Outlook Express and Roboform (form
filler) and also the tabs for selecting the right date on roboform. The only
thing I did yesterday was to run Tune Up Utilities 2008 to try and improve
the pc. Norton AV and Prevx1 say the pc is clean.

So this damage was probably done by Tune Up Utilities.
Did you save a System Restore Point before making this
change? If so, it should take only a minute to turn the
clock back so the system behaves as it used to.

Then post here what problem you wanted to solve (i.e.
what defect was Tune Up Utilities supposed to remedy?)

Try using System Restore.

Well, there you go:
The only thing I did yesterday was to run Tune Up Utilities 2008 to try

You ran a "tune up" utility and you have Norton installed.

Do a System Restore to when things worked and resist the urge to use "tune
up" utilities. Consider replacing Norton with a better, less invasive
antivirus such as NOD32 or even Avast if you want a free one. You will be
amazed at the difference in your computer's responsiveness.

To run System Restore, go to the Start Orb and in the Start Search box type
"System Restore" without the quotes. System Restore will appear in the
Programs result. Click on it, allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard.

Addendum: Sorry, I gave you instructions for running System Restore in Vista
and you have XP. My advice in my previous post remains unchanged except to
run System Restore in XP you do:

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

Don't Panic!

Thanks, I uninstalled Norton and Prevx2 found a piece of malware. Have
installed Eset as you suggested
