Program Menus

There are certain programs that have menus pop up, but the graphics are
contained within a white square and I am having trouble interacting with the
menu because the cursor believes it is over an option that I cannot see--the
option is in the white portion of the square. I know this sounds nebulous,
but it is difficult to explain. If there is anyone who thinks they know what
I am talking about and how I may be able to rectify this, I would really
appreciate it.
