Menus on Slide layout and Slide design not visible

I can not see the menus when I view Slide layout and Slide design options.
Is there a graphical setting I need to fix? The menu selection areas mostly
appear white and some outline of boxes show up when scrolled over, but
disappear after the scroll over.
