Program list goes outside monitor boundary

I just did an install that filled the program list (vertically) on the
screen ... and then some! For some strange reason, it doesn't show the new
program ... it goes off the screen. I was able to re-sort the list to see
the new install, but now, something else runs off the screen. I can see all
edges of windows on the monitor, so it's not my monitor display
configuration.

Any ideas on how to fix this. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

There are a few options. One is to right click
Start/Properties/Customize/Advanced and check Scroll Programs which scrolls
in one collumn with a little arrow at the bottom to see further down the
list. I prefer to have it expand across the screen, but I can do so in 3
collumns at 1280x1024. You are also free to delete any entries you no
longer need or use, for they are only shortcuts to the programs and not the
actual applications.

Diana,
Do you see small up/down arrows at the top and bottom of the program
listings? If so, you are set to scroll the list - just move the mouse to
the scroll arrows.

To change this, right click on empty area of taskbar. Select Properties,
Start Menu tab, Customize. In the Advanced Options list, uncheck Scroll
Programs.

Hope this helps,

Val

Hi Val,
There are no arrows ... or, if there are .. they are not visible. Until now
.... the menu expanded horizontally. There was no need for up or down arrows
for expanding. I only need to use those when I access programs that I dont'
often use. This is a mystery.

in advanced options list (below) ... Scroll Programs was not checked.

Diana, be sure to check "Scroll Programs." Why its default value is
"unchecked" remains a mystery. It's like buying a new car and the default is
"doors have no locks." Who
wants the default?

If you are like me who want to import files on the Desktop first, then sort
them and move them on to their final destinations, My Documents, My Pictures
and so forth, you may like to investigate the use of a separate box to
house these temporary files so as not to overwhelm the Desktop. I am
referring to the box of List My Most Recently Opened Documents and its Clear
List:

Start (Rt. click) > Properties > Start Menu (tab) > Customize >
Advanced > Tick box against List My Most...

Jeff,
Your suggestion will work, but I have a lot of programs. I'd prefer to see
three columns instead of the two I had. I deleted one item from my list, so
the 2nd column doesn't go entirely off the screen any more, but it's still
at the very edge. Is there a way to force a third column.

The two columns extend to the very bottom of the display almost running off
.... not a comfortable layout to manage. When I add another program, it will
run off the screen again ... argggggh. My screen (17"), has a resolution of
1024 x 768.

Hi Val,
Thanks for the response. No, there are no scroll bars ... there are two
columns of programs. I know about expanding the columns with the arrows,
but there aren't any. I appreciate the response though. I know that a lot
of people don't realize that the column will expand (scroll).

I am at the end of my 3 collumns right now. Curious as to what happens when
I add one more. I have a feeling that you are at the limit of 2 collumns at
1024x768. I may be at my limit myself, but there are always things to
delete in there you never use. I highly doubt you use every single one of
those on a daily or weekly basis. Some ore only links to uninstallers which
you definitely don't need there wasting space. I make full use of my quick
launch bar, so I seldom use the programs menu anyway.

Jeff, what you say is true. I use my quick launch for several things, but
don't want to load it up too much. I would consider removing several items
from the program list, but I don't really want to have to hunt down what the
name of the executables are for those that are not listed, if you know what
I mean.

This is interesting ... just before I sent this message with the paragraph
above, I decided to delete a few items after some closer scrutiny, however,
it didn't help. What happened is the space above the list increased, but the
space at the bottom of the screen didn't change. They are still trying to
go below the display. This is definitely not what I expected.

Sounds interesting. I'm curious to see a screenshot if you want to send
one.

Just for kicks, I set my resoloution down to 1024x768 and still get 4
collumns. I did have to readjust the horizontal and vertical size and shift
to fit the monitor correctly. You may also want to right click
Start/Properties/Customize, and check Small Icons. I bet you have large
icons set which makes sense as to why you only see 2 collumns instead of 4.
If you get 4 collumns, but still goes too low, then I think you don't quite
have your screen centered on your monitor.
