What would cause a profile to go bad? I'm miffed by this on our network and
am not sure how to troubleshoot this. The PC will boot to logon and then
hang. Is there a good place to go and read about this on the internet or
could someone give me some pointers on how to repair?

Thanks!

If you post some details and or any error messages you receive then someone
may be able to help you.

The only error we receive is after the user logs on the system just hangs
and refuses to move forward. If the user goes to another pc and logs on,
they are able to log on. Again, this is on a network and they are using SMS
authentication program. There are no error messages that appear.

"system just hangs" tells us almost nothing. Do you mean the desktop doesn't
appear? If so check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at
the Reg_Sz string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Else these may help you.

When I do this .. what am I looking to find? I know how to get into this.
And yes, the user never makes it to the desktop.

Start|Run|regedit.exe

check that the Reg_Sz string value;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Are you using Roaming profiles? If so you could delete the locally
stored version of the user's profile by, I think, right clicking the
My Computer and clicking the User Profiles tab. Select the user
(Domain/user) and it should fetch the profile from the server when the
user next logs in.

If you use local profiles, you can still delete the profile, but the
user will lose all customisations.

But first, I would check that there is ample disk space of the
machine. Lack of disk space should not cause a hang, but a message,
but it's worth a check.

Cheers,

Cliff

The assumption that I made above is that other users (eg local
Administrator) could log in and that the problem was with one user,
hence Annette's mention of profiles. If the assumption is wrong, then,
obviously, the above "solution" does not apply. Duh! Brain fade....

Cheers,

Cliff
