Profile and Personal Folder problem

I have posted the two problems below as seperate problems but no one
could solve them. I hope, by posting them together, someone will find a
common solution.
Outlook 2002 and XP
Profiles - when I open Outlook I am asked to chose which profile I want
to open. I just have one Profile listed. I can select 'always open this
option' but, on opening Outlook next time, I get the same request to
choose a Profile.
Personal Folders - I have 2 Personal Folders the the left hand column.
I want to delete one (don't know how it got there). But when I choose
PROPERTIES|CLOSE, I get 'The operation failed. The object could not be
found.'
Any connection?

I personally would start by creating a brand-new profile, not copying the
existing one. It wouldnt surprise me if a new profile fixes both problems.

Well, Brian, I suppose I made progress. Under the old Profile I had 5
pst's(?) - Archived, Outlook - Husband, Wife, Personal Folders, Husband.
Now I am down to 3 - Husband, Wife, Personal Folders. Better. Still,
when I try to close the Personal Folders, I get 'The operation failed.
The object could not be found.' Next step?

Did you verify that all five of those PSTs exist? Did you add each of those
three PSTs to a brand-new, empty profile that you created right then?

One of them - outlook.pst - did not exist.

Nope. I added only the Wife pst and one email account. The home page
shows the proper path to that file, Somehow the other 2 accounts and 2
other email addresses appeared from the vapor. The Husband pst Home page
shows a path I suppose Outlook found on its own. And the 'Personal
Folders' - where do I find a pst for that - the Home Page path is
empty. Finally, the Husband pst and the Personal Folders - if I try to
access Properties|Advanced, I get 'The operation failed. The object
could not be found.' What next?

Then you didn't follow my instructions. You need to start with a clean
profile.

Let's see. Control Panel|Mail|Show Profiles|Add
Then I enter Profile name and add an email account. What did I miss?

If you did this, then you should have exactly one PST in the profile:
wife.pst. No others can appear unless you add them.

Brian, you certainly know more than I could hope to learn about Outlook.
All I can tell you is I went through the above sequence - twice - with
the same results. But, we have made progress. On startup, I am no
longer asked to choose which Profile I want - and I have 2.
