Productivity killing Explorer crap...

I spend an inordinate amount of time resetting
Explorer to the view I want.

I've been through all the stuff of shift+click to close,
apply this view to all windows, remember each folder's
size, etc.

It simply WILL NOT stick.

It'll seem to be fine for a few days, but then,
apparently at random, certain directories display
in the useless icon/thumbnail mode when they didn't before,
the position/size/types of columns displayed will
be totally reset, etc.

I want the following to be PERMANENT:

List>>Details with the pointless "camera model"
and other useless crap columns gone FOREVER.

The size/position of Explorer to be whatever I last
left it at, or, always the same as when I last shift+clicked
it closed.

ALL settings I make to the Explorer display of root
directory of a drive to propogate to ALL existing
AND future directories ON THAT DRIVE!

Maunal reg entries welcome, I can deal with it.

Not a virus/spyware issue, please don't bombard me with useless
boilerplate links for that stuff - that's all taken care of.

This is much more specific than that.

Here's the drill:

First, you've got to edit the Registry to modify two instances of
BagMRU Size (400-Sp1, 5000-Sp2). I use a decimal value of
8,000+.
**Then if you want a fresh start - You need to delete the Bags key
where all the individual folders are numerically listed/stored.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
BagMRU Size = 8000 (or Greater) Decimal value
Bags (Delete this key if you want to start over Fresh)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
BagMRU Size = 8000 (or Greater) Decimal Value
Bags (Delete this key if you want to start over Fresh)

Reboot

Then define a "Default" view and apply to all folders. Finally, open
and position each as you like. Afterwards, XP should maintain
the views unless you reach the roll-off value.

Excellent!!!

I'll give this a try later, after a System Restore point...

On the same topic, have you found any way to keep
Explorer from expanding the tree when you click on
a drive? I have a need to manually create several folders
several times a week (dest. dirs. for encoded video clips)
and clicking the root then needing to click it again to
de-expand it so I can see the tree for my other drives
before going to New>>Folder wastes my
time as well...

Thx again for the reg entries.

It only remembers a limited number of views. Kelly has a fix for this
at
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 2, left, 'Increase number of folder views'

Or install SP2 - that does not go quite as far but should be enough
