Probs upgrading Win98 to WinXPhome

Upgrading from Win98 to WinXP. The upgrade runs fine
until the system reboot stage. The Win XP logo is
displayed .then locks up after a short time.
System uses AMD 2400 processor 1gb ram 90gb free HD. I
have upgraded my system OK .I am beginning to regret
offering to help a friend! Any suggestions gratefully
received.

Make sure you unplug all external devices such as printers and scanners (not
the keyboard and mouse, of course).

Remove all programs that the upgrade disc tells you to before you start.

This tells you how to do a clean boot, which I found was necessary with my
WinME system.

Try stripping down the computer to the bare essentials. Also, remove
512MB of ram. If the MB has a Raid Controller
don't use the raid channels for the install. Use the primary IDE
channel.

Usually problems installing MS operating systems stem from hardware
failures, most notably bad RAM. Do a RAM test - I like Memtest86 - and
if that looks good, test the hard drive.
