upgrading win98 to winxp

JC

Hi there:
I just got an used Omnibook XE3-gc HP Lap Top with win98
SE in it. It has 20GB HD, 256MB RAM and a 750MHz
Processor. I'd like to upgrade it to win XP. I've heard
that I'd need dome drivers in order to do so. Is this
true? If so, what driver would I need to get? where would
I need to place them? In other words, how do I do this?
or should I just pop in the winxp cd in it?
Thanks

Some of your hardware may need updated XP drivers, maybe. If you do need XP
drivers then you will have see if your computer manufacturer has the updated
for XP drivers. Run the XP Compatibility test that is on your XP CD and you
will know of any driver problem areas before you install XP--just insert the
CD and read the directions.

Hi JC,

Your best source of information is going to be the laptop manufacturer. They
should be able to tell you if the system is a) upgradable to WinXP and b) if
the necessary drivers for normal function are either included in the retail
version or if they are available for download. They may also offer an
upgrade version that is specific to your system. You want to be careful, as
laptops can be very finicky.

Your laptop is probably upgradeable, but I wouldn't upgrade to XP. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...Id=31650&prodTypeId=321957&objectID=c00026663

You WILL lose some functionality, and unless you run XP in a diminished configuration without the eyecandy and special features, you system will be noticeably slower in addition to the loss of functionality.
Your AV, disk utilities and other software will need to be upgraded to XP compatible versions.

I would suggest you apply all the latest critical updates, upgrade the memory to the max for the system and save your money for a laptop with XP pre-installed. Win 98SE is a very stable and useful OS when properly configured and maintained.
