Problems with Xp at start

I had lots of problem with win xp so i decided to
reformat my cpu. I deided to reinstall Xp and told myself
that the problems were caused by some kind of virus. But
now, the first day with I reinstalled Xp the same
problems came back:
1. My computer froze during windowns is starting
2. I have to wait 1 minute after windows is finally
started to start any application because they just dont
open

Does the problem occur with a clean/new install of Windows XP?
Does the problem occur in safe mode?
Is there any interesting events in the System Event log?
Are there any services that neither blank of "Started" in the Status column?
Check for driver updates for your device drivers and firmware/BIOS updates
for the computer/motherboard.

Iust dl'ed the newest updates and restarted. I intalled
the latest version of quick time viewer and restarted.
now I am stuck on the windows is starting screen. nothing
happens. I have gone to dos prompt and ran check disk,
stick when I try to run last known good as well and
sticks while booting in any of the safe modes. Not sure
what else to do. SEarched the knowlede bases as well.

Any help? I am lucky to have a laptop here to get on
line with otherwise I would be SOL. Thanks.
