Problems with Word 2003 in XP Professional x64 environment . . .

Ever since I got a new computer with Windows XP Professional x64, Office 2003
is acting weird.

Among the more aggravating problems in WORD:

* The "About the default working folder" page in Microsoft Office Word Help
says, "If you select another folder when opening or saving, that folder
becomes the working folder." That's the way it's SUPPOSED to work, and how it
always USED TO work on my old computer. But my working folder does not change
when I Open a document or Save it As something. Whenever I go to open a new
document or Save a document As something, I always find myself back in my
original default directory ("My Documents").

* In Word, more often than not, when I change some aspect of one paragraph
(say, the margin), then all paragraphs in the entire document reformat to
match. When I hit Ctrl-Z, all the OTHER paragraphs return to how they were,
but the newly reformatted paragraph remains reformatted as I wanted it. This
is very frustrating!

Any suggestions on how to overcome these problems? I haven't found anyone
else commenting on these issues.

Is there something else at work, here? (The fact that my files are actually
saved on a VPN, though I work in cached mode and synchronize only once every
24 hours?)

For the first, I have no explanation, but note the following: If you start
Word with a blank document (using a shortcut to open Word), the default save
location will be the folder specified for Word documents on the File
Locations tab of Tools | Options. If you change the working folder by
opening a document from another folder (or by starting Word by
double-clicking on a document), then that becomes the active folder. And the
folder for Save As is always the same as the folder where the original
document is stored. The behavior you describe definitely doesn't seem to be
in accordance with these principles; whether the VPN is a factor or not, I
don't know.
