Problems with shutdown

Hi Everyone,
I'm having some problems with my computer: the machine restarts when I try
to shut it down. The standby option doesn't seem to work either, it just
kicks me back to the main screen after I try to set it for standby. I
recently formatted my hard drive and re-installed Windows XP SP2 on it, but
the problem was not there when I started installing the rest of the programs
onto the hard disk. This particular problem started just two days ago and I
am not sure if the updates I installed had anything to do with the problem.
I already tried several of the solutions Microsoft has in its KDB, but
nothing seems to work. Does anyone have a solution to my problem?? or do you
need more info in order to get to a solution??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.... =)

I would like to thank you for your comments on my problem, they were very
helpful. I had tried several of them already, but I still have the same
problem even after trying out the other solutions. I think I will have to
re-install windows on my computer again, I don't see any other way of fixing
this problem. The good thing about it is that all the programs I already
have in here can be installed again, and most of the work needed can be
acomplished within an hour or two. I did not want to do a re-install because
I had everything just the way I wanted, but I think the problem merits a
harsh solution to resolve it. Thank you again for the help.... I bookmarked
several of your answers just in case I need them later on.... lol... I keep
a database of the all the problems that come my way, as well as the answers
to the them. You can be sure that most of your suggestions will make it in
there.

Thanks again

Keep in mind that reinstalling may *not* fix your problem.
