XP shutdown problem

After my computer has been running for several hours I have shutdown
problems.
The following error messages have to be "end tasked" before it will shut
down:

1. HP Lamp (i think from my scanner)
2. ccApp
3. msmsgs.exe
4. Apoint.exe
5. ctfmon.exe
6. explorer.exe (usually 2 of these)
7. MCI command handling window
8. connections tray
9. And sometimes others

It seems to have something to do with standby mode.
Under Power Management, I selected "never" for standby mode, but it will not
keep that setting. The longest time it will give me is 5 hours.

Does anyone out there have any idea what this conflict is? Maybe it has
nothing to do with standby mode.

Would certainly appreciate any help or ideas about where to start on this.
Thanks,
Pam
