Laptop will not shut down

Hi there, guys. I'm hoping you can help me out a bit.

I have a Toshiba laptop, running a Windows XP operating system. Here's the
problem - I can't shut down my computer. (Yeah, yeah, I read the other
shut-down problems threads, too many solutions to figure out which one to
use!)

I try to shut down from the start>shutdown, it does nuthin'. I tried to use
the shutdown command ctrl-alt-del, again, nuthin'. If I try to shut down with
the power button, my computer just goes into standby. I even tried to restart
by downloading some new MS updates (some of 'em have a force-restart
command), and even trying to force a restart under that didn't work!

Help?

Try to edit this Key:
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer =
"NoClose" REG_DWORD 0000000 (0)

Or this Key:
[-]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System =
" shutdownwithoutlogon" REG_DWORD 0X0000001 (1)

"undockwithoutlogon" REG_DWORD 0X0000001 (1)

Try to scan for malware and viruses on your system and system Restore to an
earlier date when you have this feature on the system.
If the above didn't help try to scan for Viruses and look in the Event
Viewer for any error messages(X) and post them back, also try the GPO group
policy by opening a run command and type in:
gpedit.msc click [OK] and see if your profile allowed or denied to
turn/Shut the computer OFF, this feature only available in XP Pro not XP HD.

When you tell Windows to shut down it begins a process of closing
applications etc. Use CTRL/ALT/DELETE to use task manager to see what
applications or processes may not be shutting down. Then end task if
an application is not responding. Antivirus programs are notorious for
hanging the shutdown process. You may see something related to that
under processes that needs to be closed. If that is not it check the
Power Options in control panel and change them up to see if something
is hindering the hardware from a normal shutdown.

Thanks, but I fixed the problem just before you posted. Another friend of
mine advised me to remove my battery while my laptop was unplugged. My
computer works just fine now.

Actually, that's not an MS issue, it's with the laptop itself, and there is
a little extension of that process that can help in more severe cases, where
the system can't even start.

With the battery out and the AC adapter connected, press and hold the power
switch for 30 seconds or so. This helps clear the BIOS, and let the
machine boot or shut down properly.
