Problems with renaming

Molly

I just installed software (ZoomBrowser EX) to download
pictures from my digital camera (Canon Powershot A70) to
my computer. The downloads went fine, and the renaming
of several sub-folders of pictures went fine too, but in
the middle of the third sub-folder I got a message saying
the file couldn't be accessed, and my entire computer
froze up and wouldn't let me do anything. Finally it
came back and I tried again, but my whole picture folder
just closed when I opened up the problem sub-folder from
before...all the other folders seem to open and take
renaming with no problems. Any ideas?

The file couldn't be accessed.
Accessed from where? Your camera memory card or from the subfolder?
If from your subfolder, did you open this subfolder and actually look at the
pictures before attempting to rename?
If from your memory card, while you were downloading and renaming
simultaneously, did you have enough battery power in your camera, or perhaps
your USB cable lost good contact.
Answering these questions would help us trying to figure out what is going
on.

Is there any possibility that your camera
batteries could be low?

Maybe the following links will be useful.
There's an update for the ZoomBrowser
to version 4.6.0.c

I'm still looking at Canon support pages, but thought I'd
answer your questions to see if it helps anyone:
My camera had already been disconnected and all the
pictures downloaded, so I don't think it has to do with
the batteries.
All the pictures were successfully downloaded from the
memory card to my hard drive, and I opened up all the
folders and saw them before I started renaming. Certain
subfolders just seem to have problems opening or staying
open when I try to look at the pictures, so I think it's
something to do with the computer itself.
Thanks for your time and efforts to help out.

From what you wrote, it sounds logical that the fault is on the computer
side.
Close all running programs. Navigate to the subfolder and try to open this
subfolder alone so that you are using a minimum of memory. If this fails
some file corruption may be the culprit during renaming. Can you download
again from your camera?
Even if you deleted the files from the memory card, you can recover them
with the procedure given below if all else fails with Cannon support.

Make a new folder on your C drive.

Name it Recovery

Go to this site:

http://www.foto-erhardt.de/modules.php?name=Downloads

Download the free file: Digital Image Recovery in your Recovery folder.

The file will be Digital Image Recovery.zip

Once in your folder you need to "unzip" or "extract" this .zip file.

When you unzip or extract this .zip file select your Recovery folder for the
destination.

You will now have the file: 32fsu21.exe in this folder.

Double click on it to install the software.

Once installed you can change the language from German to English when the
software start.

Follow the directions on your screen after you start this software, very
easy to use and very good. You only need to connect your camera with the
card, open My Computer and look under Storage with removable drive. There
should be a drive letter (E,F,G or H)for your camera. You select this letter
when the software opens to scan a drive for recovery.

Maybe you never used a zip/unzip software. If so post again and I will find
a free one for you or just use google to find one.

Several available.

Thanks very much; I kept my pictures on the memory card
just in case, so I will try downloading again.
