problems with mass storage devices via USB ports

I purchased an mp3 player that does not require a driver with win xp. When I connected the device the 'new hardward wizard' popped up and I couldn't get the thing to work. It did function on a freinds laptop.
Looked through various sites and thought the problem was the USBSTOR.SYS file was missing so I got a copy of that and put it in the system32/drivers folder. Still nothin.
I'm not really that technically minded so am in need of help, please.
