Problems with "main explorer"

Hi folks,
a quick question: On one of my Win2K systems I have a problem with running the explorer (I mean any explorer). What could be the cause and what is the cure?

Please supply full details:
- what exactly happens
- verbatim error messages
- since when the problem has sprung up
- what you have changed or installed recently
- if you have scanned your machine with the very latest virus scanner
