Problems with fax

I am having problems with the fax that comes with windows 2000. It
starts, I can enter a fax number and destination name etc but then it
always comes up as no dial tone. In control panel there is no modem
listed. I'm using a USB external modem, but there is an old internal
modem that can be found on device manager (it's there and there are no
problems).

Why doesn't control panel show a modem? Could this be the root of the
fax problem? (It doesn't know how to send a fax?)

Any help would be appreciated.

We have an issue here. First you say, "In control panel there is no modem
listed." Then you say, "..there is an old internal modem that can be found
on (sic) device manager..." So my question is, why does that modem NOT show
as a modem in the Control Problem? I think you need to start there. Maybe
that modem is not a FAX modem is that the case? In any case are you sure
the drivers for your extternal USB FAX modem are installed correctly; that
the USB modem is a FAX modem? And yes I suspect if the FAX applet in the
control panel shows empty then that is whre your problem lies. You need to
be able to Print to the FAX machine in the Print properties to send a FAX in
Windows 2000.
