Hi there. When i open my home page (MSN) some of the small advertising boxes
do not open up. I just get a message saying Explorer was unable to link to
the Web page. The page might be temporarily unavailable etc, etc. Also on
some other pages the small advertising boxes are blank apart from a small red
box with a red X inside. If i click the X i get this message. The page cannot
be displayed. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable, etc etc.
Cannot find server or DNS Error. Network Diagnostics found this problem...
DHCPServer = 213.243.153.175 (FAILED)
Pinging 213.243.153.175 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 213.243.153.175:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)
Any ideas what to do. Thanks for any help or advice.

Hi,

The ip you provided - 213.243.153.175 - also timed out for me. It resolves
to: UNKNOWN.pp.htv.fi. As you mentioned, this does seem to be an advertising
site. More than likely, the advertisement are directing to this site. Because
the site is unavailable, it cannot retrieve the appropriate content, and thus
the box with the red x.

Unless this is causing additional problems, or you find yourself getting
other boxes with red x's, this particular problem is beyond your control. So you
shouldn't worry too much about it - it's one less ad cluttering up the website
:p

Best regards,

Altrus

This is only a problem if you don't have an IP address
or you don't have any DNS server addresses.

Since you mention "Network Diagnostics" I will assume
that your OS is XP even though you didn't disclose that.
You may find those addresses in other lines on that report
otherwise you switch to your cmd window and enter:

ipconfig /all

Pinging 213.243.153.175 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 213.243.153.175:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

This doesn't necessarily mean that there is a problem.
It may mean only that this particular server (or some servers
on the path to it) block ICMP protocol.

Any ideas what to do. Thanks for any help or advice.

Your problem symptom could be explained by erroneous addresses
in your HOSTS file or by errors from your DNS. To test the former
rename (or delete) your HOSTS file. To test the latter extract the
server name from the src= parameter on the <img> tag which is
causing the Red-X (e.g. using View Source); then use nslookup
to see if your DNS can do that lookup for you without timing out.
Note that that method bypasses both the HOSTS file and the
dnscache; the lookups done for ping and tracert do not,
so another way to test if the others are the problem cause is to
compare the addresses displayed by each.

If you need more help please cite a specific example
and disclose your DNS address. That way someone
will be able to use nslookup to (try to) simulate the same
lookup that you are getting.
