Running XP SP3, Netgear FA311 PCI card, Netgear FR114P router and a cable
modem.

I am experiencing sluggish internet access so decided run "Network
Diagnostics" which showed the following failure/s:

Network Adapters [00000001] NETGEAR FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter FAILED

DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED)
61.9.211.1 (FAILED)

I would like assistance with the above.

Thank you.

Hi
61.9.211.1 is an external Internet IP.
You start first with local connection (like pinging the Router), to make
sure that your system works OK locally.
Maybe this can Help, http://www.ezlan.net/debug.html

MMmm, Well if the network adapter card failure is valid, then the rest of
the failures follow as expected, and you should have no internet access.
Can you ping the router? Usually home routers have a default address of
192.168.0.1 or similar.

From the link above:
Restart Your Network Devices

Many problems are solved by rebooting your system. Do it in this order:

1. Power off your computer.
2. Power off your router.
3. Power off your modem.
4. Power on your modem. Wait until modem is completely restarted before
the next step. This may take upward of two minutes.
5. Power on your router. Wait until router completely restarts. This also
can take upward of two minutes.
6. Power on your computer.

I cannot get onto the Internet with a computer
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/FR114P_Qcard_v1.1.pdf

Try to access the Router browser by typing in your address (on the Internet
Explorer) this IP address:

http://192.168.0.1

Go through the configuration and make sure all settings are correct pwer
your ISP (BigPond).

Update the Firmware for the Router from here:
FR114P Firmware Version 1.5 Release 14

Thank you for all 3 responses. I checked 3 other PC's on the network and all
came up with the same error which points to the router?

I did complete all suggested tasks which proved everything to be OK except
one thing that I do not understand is that the router "Basic Settings" -
Password was using an old ISP access password. I changed it some time back
but forgot to change the router "password" at the same time. I don't
understand why/how I still had internet access with the router's ISP password
being incorrect.

Correcting the password however made no difference to my initial problem.

I then checked "Router Status" - WAN Port - DHCP = BPA (no logged in/out) so
I opened "Show WAN Status" - Details:
Connection Status Logged Out
Getting IP Address 121.210.210.203
Getting Network Mask 255.255.240.0

"Connect" "Disconnect"

Every 5 seconds it attempts to log in. If I click "Connect" a new screen
"Server Response" "Failure" "BPA Fail to log in" is shown.

Internet access does not appear to be affected for all 4 PC's during the
above.

On the "Router Status" screen below a blue line which flashes every 5
seconds during the connection attempt there is:

a box for ticking/unticking "Dial on demand"

"Apply" "Cancel"

I can find no reference to this in any documentation.

Finally I should add that this PC's motherboard Gigabyte GA8 KNXP Rev 1 has
an on-board Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connector which I cannot get to work
as it drops in and out every 5 seconds so is now disabled. I have asked
Gigabyte, Netgear and even a couple of posts on this site but the problem
remains unresolved.

There is also a 56k modem installed for Faxes.

I hope my long winded response makes sense and helps rather hinders further
diognosis.

Thank you for your patience.
