problems with CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R

I have a Sony DRU710A drive with the most recent firmware installed.
I've verified with Sony that my media is compatible. I can write and
read DVD-RW and CD-RW disks, but I can't read or write CD-R, DVD-R, or
DVD+R disks, all of which should be supported by this drive. When I try
to access them I get the error message "Incorrect Function". I do not
have any Roxio product installed - I use Nero. I've also tried other
burner products - it seems like I can write to the disks, but once I've
written to them, they are not readable. I am at my wit's end - does
anyone have any suggestions. The DVD-RW drive is set as the master and
the DVD-ROM drive is set as slave. None of the suggestions that I've
googled for seem to help. Any ideas, anyone?

I've heard it's not good practice to have two such devices on the same
IDE. Try each drive individually set as master for elimination purposes.

Anne,

I am not clear on why you have 2 DVD drives in your computer. The DVD-RW
drive includes the functions of the DVD-ROM drive so you are duplicating
services. My suggestion would be to remove the DVD-ROM drive and ensure that
the jumper on the DVR-RW drive is set as master.

The DVD_ROM was originally the master - I set it to slave and the DVD-RW
to master, but that didn't help. I've simply disconnected the DVD-ROM
now, and still have the problem.

I have 2 DVD drives out of laziness, I guess. I originally had a CD
burner and the DVD-ROM, then replaced the CD burner with the DVD-RW.
I've disconnected the DVD-ROM and verified the DVD-RW is set to master,
but the problem remains. I've verified that the media I'm using is
certified for this drive - any ideas on what the problem could be now?

Has the Region code on the DVD-RW drive ever been set ?
What does it's operating mode show for the IDE channel ?
Have you run the Nero Tool to interrogate the drive and see
it's supported media mappings ?

Yes, to US.

I don't understand what that means.

it's supported media mappings ?

Yes, it appears that the media I'm trying to use is supported.

Actually, I re read your problem and confess that I have suffered a
similar problem with an LG combo. It could read anything I had burned my
self but nothing that had been prerecorded. This occurred after
overwriting the firmware a second time with updated software. My
neighbour seems to think that firmware should not be overwitten more
than once, but I have never verified this.

I finally gave in and just did a repair install (not the recovery
console thing). Now everything is working just great, better than
before even. I had to do some fiddling around to get the most current
drivers back, but now all is well.

Note - I don't recommend a repair install unless you've got plenty of
time on your hands. Even with SP2 on CD, it took forever to install,
and then there were still more updates to download.
