Problems with CD & DVD Drives

N

Noel S Pamfree

On the PC I have been working on today (XP Home edition) for a friend there
are some very strange happenings. His CD drive (internal) will play a music
CD using Media Player but if I put a data CD in I can log onto the drive but
not see any tracks.

The DVD drive (internal) only made itself available once during the day for
most of it I get the 'not accessible dialogue box.

My data pen and the photo card reader (both using USB ports) cannot be
accessed either.

However the Scanner works fine as does the printer (both use USB ports).

I have tired uninstalling the 2 drives and re-installing them but it makes
no difference.

I am desperate - any ideas?

Many thanks,

Noel

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, remove All instances of the
problem hardware, reboot, and let Windows re-detect.

I have tried this but it's just the same.

I am wondering if some sort of Trojan could be responsible?
