Problems with AutoText and Numbering

I am using Word 2003 and I'm having difficulty getting the AutoText to comply
when used in conjuction with AutoNumbering. For example, I number:

1) (enter)
2) (enter)
3) Then I type an AutoText here, for example, and it will number this line
2 and create a new line 3 for me to start on.

So my numbering looks something like this:

1)
2)
2)
2)
2)
5)

etc.

Any suggestions? Thanks, Todd

Hi Todd

There are several things going on here:

1. A paragraph's formatting, including information about its numbering, is
stored in an end-of-paragraph marker. See the following for more
informaiton:
What do all those funny marks, like the dots between the words in my
document, and the square bullets in the left margin, mean?
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm

2. If you save an AutoText that includes the end-of-paragraph marker, then
when you insert the AutoText it will bring its formatting (including its
numbering, or lack of it) with the text. But if you select some text without
selecting the end-of-paragraph marker, and save it as an AutoText, the
AutoText will consist only of text.

3. It's much easier to apply numbering of the kind you need by using the
built-in List Number style. To see more about applying styles, see

Hope this helps.
