Problems with 7.2

G

Guest

I getting dotNet errors all over the place from these CatControl drivers. The
plain drivers seem find but the control center is causing problems.

No actual crashes but many exceptions. Can't find c:\branding.dll, can't find
cc-skins.xml, can't find core-static.xml... It really isn't any wonder that it
can't find them. These files are no where to be found on the drive.

My card is cheapie 1650-pro HIV_ Not sure why that should be an issue.

Any clues?

Bad install or possibly the file you D/L is corrupt. I see .MSI installer
files in ATI Support folder for these. I searched for the files without the
path or extender. You may need to clean before reinstalling.

I did a 'clean' install. Or at least followed ATI's instructions_ (no sure how
much that actually 'cleans' out_ Also redownloaded the file_ Same issue. Seems
to me like the files just aren't there. At least they don't show up after the
install is complete.

You have the latest dot net installed, 3.0?

Bill

Yes... 1.1, 2, 3, VS2005 for debuging and development. And a handy tool for
viewing the actual contents of the MSI tables...

I searched in the actual MSI files and I don't find these anywhere. CLOSE but
not by these names. In addition why on earth are the RAID and IDE drivers in
this install package???? Doesn't seem to me like I want my video card drivers
screwing around with my raid array. There is no 'binding.dll' file any place in
the MSI tables. There is no ccc-skins.xml file either. There IS a skins.xml in
the CCC directory but the error in the event log clearly says, "CCC-Skins.xml"
in the skins directory. Nadda there!! Same goes for C:\Program Files\ATI
Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\Core-Static.xml'. No such file. Same for
'file:///C:\Branding.dll' Nothing like that on my machine OR in the MSI files
that I have found yet...

Looks to me like they have some problems here. Ultimately results in a .NET
exception in the system log. Not particularly kool.

Well sorry I can't be of more help. Only thing I can think of is to
try removing then re-installing .Dot Net 3.0, DirectX, then the drivers
in that order as Administrator in safe mode and not a power user, if
you hadn't already. I recall Corel X3 would seem to install but not
work when installed < for me anyway > as a power user but worked when
installed as Administrator.

I'd seen where others were having problems and had fixed their's by
installing .Dot Net 3.0.

I dual boot with Linux and ATI was such a pita to get running that I
went to a Nvidia card. The latest ATI I've got is a X800PRO with older
drivers that let you use the old style control panel.

I think ATI made a big mistake using dot net to run their new control
panel. Hope you figure it out.

As near as I can tell no amount of reinstalling or cleaning or anything else
will fix references in the code to files that don't exist or are not included in
the installation. It looks very much like someone at ati botched the build for
this version. Keep in mind IT DOES RUN... but I'm not going to tolerate my event
logs getting loaded with crap from the nonessential (skins and all that crap)
junk failing to run. I have sent off a detailed note to ATI_ I don't expect they
will do anything until the note is translated.

Please post the "exact" file-name of the ATI driver install package, as well
as an md5sum of the binary. I'll then compare this to my working (verified
by having a 7.2 w/ CCC install working just fine for me since 02/22/07 when
I first installed them) set of Cat 7.2 files.

Something is obviously "off" here since the Cat 7.2 release has been out
since 02/21/07 and this is the first I've heard of your particular issue.

Ah ha!! Now HERE is an interesting note. I just downloaded the 7.2 package from
the HIS site. WHAT A MAJOR DIFFERENCE!!! ALL of the missing files are there AND
there is no funky RAID driver tacked on. The download file is about almost 4
times bigger and it looks like this one might actually work. Something is WRONG
with the file on the ATI site. Plain and simple. Someone messed up.

*7-2_xp_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_41238.exe 7d0d4ac03680079df70b7d8fc126b305

Looks like your file is a binary match to the file I downloaded 2/22/07 and
have been using successfully ever since.

Only think I can suggest it uninstalling, then running Driver Cleaner Pro on
all ATI software while in safe mode, reboot, reinstall. If that doesn't
work, then it must be gremlins.

drivers that let you use the old style control panel.

I think ATI made a big mistake using dot net to run their new control
panel. Hope you figure it out.

Bill

As near as I can tell no amount of reinstalling or cleaning or anything
else
will fix references in the code to files that don't exist or are not
included in
the installation. It looks very much like someone at ati botched the build
for
this version. Keep in mind IT DOES RUN... but I'm not going to tolerate my
event
logs getting loaded with crap from the nonessential (skins and all that
crap)
junk failing to run. I have sent off a detailed note to ATI_ I don't
expect they
will do anything until the note is translated.

Tony

Sure.. Here ya go!!

[Path] / filename MD5 sum

Ah ha!! Now HERE is an interesting note. I just downloaded the 7.2 package from
the HIS site. WHAT A MAJOR DIFFERENCE!!! ALL of the missing files are there AND
there is no funky RAID driver tacked on. The download file is about almost 4
times bigger and it looks like this one might actually work. Something is WRONG
with the file on the ATI site. Plain and simple. Someone messed up.

Never mind... The HIS driver is even worse than the ATI one. Less entries in the
error logs BUT it will only run in basic mode. POS..

I tried 7.1 but THOSE really suck. I could not get my machine to power down
until I uninstalled 7.1_ anybody want to buy a POS x1650 card? I think I will
go try an nvidia card. Maybe they have drivers that don't cause a problem. Plus
the quality of this 1650 card sort of bites. For example the letters flicker as
I'm typing this note. Pretty crappy when a card doesn't work well in regular
windows_ Perhaps gamers never actually use a text editorr and don't care if the
quality sinks as long as the games move along. Time to get rid of radeon and try
to find something that works.

Okay.. I tried ONE more installation. I have completely WASTED more than a day
on this crap.

This time I installed the driver first then the CCC after downloading each part
from the ATI site. Now the thing will not come up in anything but basic
configuration mode...

These guys are freaking hacks slapping together crap and selling it. I have had
more than enough of my time wasted on foolish gargage built by off shore fools.

F&*^ ATI. Their stuck sucks.

Okay.. I tried ONE more installation. I have completely WASTED more than a

on this crap.

This time I installed the driver first then the CCC after downloading each
part
from the ATI site. Now the thing will not come up in anything but basic
configuration mode...

These guys are freaking hacks slapping together crap and selling it. I
have had
more than enough of my time wasted on foolish gargage built by off shore
fools.

F&*^ ATI. Their stuck sucks.

While I do feel bad for you and wish you would have been able to reach a
peaceful agreement with your ATI drivers, I cannot understand how some
people encounter such difficulty with their ATI and/or NVidia drivers in
Windows. I've had green and red cards over the years (since my voodoo2) and
have installed probably 100's of iterations of these graphics drivers from
both camps. The *only* time I ever encountered any real stress though was
with the Linux drivers for these cards. That was insane - missing symbols,
bus locks, hours of man pages, missing dependencies, kernel header
mismatches... FSCK!!! Now that is some driver difficulty. But in Windows
I've never had a problem.

There must be something else wrong with your system for you to be
encountering such difficulty with such a basic driver install. You're not
the only person to have downloaded and installed Cat 7.2 ya know. On the
other hand, you are the first person that I have heard of to run into these
kinds of issues with the Cat 7.2 release. Maybe some other app screwed up
your .net install? Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling .net? Do you
have the .net service packs installed?

Another thing to try was suggested by First-of-One, which is to not use the
ATI .net based CCC at all. Merely install the driver component and then use
ATI Tray Tools for driver configuration.

Bad install or possibly the file you D/L is corrupt. I see
.MSI
installer
files in ATI Support folder for these. I searched for the
files
without the
path or extender. You may need to clean before reinstalling.
ati.com/install

I did a 'clean' install. Or at least followed ATI's
instructions_

Same
issue. Seems
to me like the files just aren't there. At least they don't

You have the latest dot net installed, 3.0?

Bill

Yes... 1.1, 2, 3, VS2005 for debuging and development. And a handy
tool
for
viewing the actual contents of the MSI tables...
<snip>

Well sorry I can't be of more help. Only thing I can think of is to
try removing then re-installing .Dot Net 3.0, DirectX, then the
drivers
in that order as Administrator in safe mode and not a power user, if
you hadn't already. I recall Corel X3 would seem to install but not
work when installed < for me anyway > as a power user but worked
when
installed as Administrator.

I'd seen where others were having problems and had fixed their's by
installing .Dot Net 3.0.

I dual boot with Linux and ATI was such a pita to get running that
I
went to a Nvidia card. The latest ATI I've got is a X800PRO with
older
drivers that let you use the old style control panel.

I think ATI made a big mistake using dot net to run their new
control
panel. Hope you figure it out.

Bill

As near as I can tell no amount of reinstalling or cleaning or
anything
else
will fix references in the code to files that don't exist or are not
included in
the installation. It looks very much like someone at ati botched the
build
for
this version. Keep in mind IT DOES RUN... but I'm not going to
tolerate
my
event
logs getting loaded with crap from the nonessential (skins and all
that
crap)
junk failing to run. I have sent off a detailed note to ATI_ I don't
expect they
will do anything until the note is translated.

Please post the "exact" file-name of the ATI driver install package,
as
well
as an md5sum of the binary. I'll then compare this to my working
(verified
by having a 7.2 w/ CCC install working just fine for me since 02/22/07
when
I first installed them) set of Cat 7.2 files.

Something is obviously "off" here since the Cat 7.2 release has been
out
since 02/21/07 and this is the first I've heard of your particular
issue.

Tony

Sure.. Here ya go!!

[Path] / filename MD5 sum
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7-2_xp_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_41238.exe
7d0d4ac03680079df70b7d8fc126b305

Hmmm...

*7-2_xp_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_41238.exe 7d0d4ac03680079df70b7d8fc126b305

Looks like your file is a binary match to the file I downloaded 2/22/07
and
have been using successfully ever since.

Only think I can suggest it uninstalling, then running Driver Cleaner
Pro on
all ATI software while in safe mode, reboot, reinstall. If that doesn't
work, then it must be gremlins.

Tony

Tried that 3 times. It isn't a conflict. What it appears to be is
multiple hacks
and sloppiness in the CCC application build.

Look I can't believe you guys aren't seeing these problems since it seems
fairly
obvious the applications are looking for files that simply don't get
installed
at all. Have you looked at the ACEE event log? At the information
messages_
These are not just information these are errors. Plus the occasional .net
exception when you actually use the CCC GUI? Do you have 'information'
events
filtered on your event logs? Better take a closer look_

'C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\skins\ccc-skins.xml'. - does
not
exist

'C:\Program Files\ATI
Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\Core-Static.xml'. - does not exist

'file:///C:\Branding.dll' - does not exist

Now exactly how is it that YOUR installation isn't looking for these same
files?
Or perhaps you HAVE these files? If so where did you get them? The files
are
absolutely NOT included in the install package_

I DO have the file
'C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\skins\skins.xml' but the
freaking app
isn't looking for that one.
\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\Core-Static.xml
simply isn't
anywhere to be found_ Do you have this one??

Hi again,

I'm the person who asked yesterday where the HIS site is.

I downloaded the 7.2 file from HIS and only ran the driver install pgm on
top of the drivers that came with the ATI site's 7.2. The new drivers are
working better than the ones installed with ATI's 7.2. I don't know why,
since they are the same version, but I was having jerky motion with the
earlier install. Now MS Flight Simulator X, MS Train Simulator and Ship
Simulator all have smooth motion with clearer graphics. I did a clean
install of the ATI 7.2 last week and the Catalyst Control Center is working
fine. I am running the ATI Radeon X1650 Pro AGP on a Dell Dimension 8300,
Pentium 4, 3.4Ghz, 2 Gigs RAM and a PC Power 410 Watt PSU and Windows XP Pro
w/SP2 and all other updates.

There are two small problems I'm having that I would like some ideas on.
Sometimes when I open Train Simulator I get a black screen with a 1/2"
horizontal stripe with compressed graphics. I can press the Windows key and
the program drops to the launch bar. Then I click on the icon on the launch
bar and it will fill the screen normally.

The second problem is when I try to restart Windows I get a second or two of
white stripes than the screen goes black. The booting takes place because I
can hear the opening .wav file and a click when my reminder pgm activates
the tray notification.

Thanks

Frank
