I had Millinium as my opsys. Now tht I installed XP sp2 it takes 5 min

accessable. What's wrong here?

What's wrong is that there are dozens of possible reasons for those
behaviors and you haven't told us anything that might point to a specific
cause.

Are you using novell or anything like that?

Did you do a fresh install or an update?

Describe how you moved from Me to XP - wipe/install, Upgrade...

What have you changed since installing XP?

How much memory do you have in the computer?

What version of NIS?

If you disconnect your computer from the internet, disable NIS, then try
and start word, does it load faster? (remember to enable NIS after this
test).

This problem started immediatly after I installed XP. I think it has
something to do with virus scanning since that's what appears in the lower
left of the screen while Word is being brought up. Then I get an 'error'
message saying there was a problem and do I want to send an error message. I
just reloaded Word and there is not change. I have 256 meg memory.
Two questions: Can I do anything about the virus scanning? What is NIS?

Did you make sure that your applications and virus software were
ready/compatible for XP?

256MB of memory is very little for XP, I've seen computers boot up and
use more than 256MB of memory without running any extra applications.

Open Norton, disable support for MS Office and see if that helps.

The other thing you might want to consider is getting more RAM, 512MB is
the sweet spot for XP for most users (actually 384MB, but it's easier to
say 512MB).

I'll try to get more memory. the problem w/norton is that when I try to open
it I get a quick hourglass then it returns to the link I can't open it. When
I try to delete it from the add/delete screen, I still get the errors. does
xp have its own virus protection? If so, how do I activate it?
