Slow launch of applications after connecting to internet

Hi
I hope this is right group for this issue. I have the following problem,
which
started appearing out of nowhere recently.

When I launch IE or anyother application, either from the quick launch or
from desktop or from the Start menu, it opens up immidiately when i am not
connected to internet.

But, when i boot up my laptop, and connect to my broadband internet and
then try to launch IE (or anyother application for that matter - outlook
express, for example), it takes ages before it shows up, probably even 5
mins. After this initial delay everything returns to normal. This happens
everytime I connect to internet after booting up.

I initally thought it was a virus or a spyware issue. But, my system seems
to be clear of any spywares or viruses.

I check my system every day for any spyware or virus using ad-aware, spybot,
yahoo anti-spy and microsoft anti-spy. I also run norton anti-virus 2005
everyday. All the above tools report my system is free from spyware and
virus. I also check my internet security using norton's online security
check. It reports my system is secure.

I thought perhaps yahoo and google toolbar (and desktop search) might be the
cause. So i uninstalled these. Still no joy.

My laptop has all the latest windows update. Also my virus and spyware
definitions are upto date.

I am using windows xp sp2 home edition with IE 6. I use norton internet
security 2005 for firewall.

I have to tell that windows, norton and microsoft anti-spyware check for
updates automatically when i connect to internet. Will this be the cause?. I
also notice that there are 5 instances of svchost.exe running. is this normal?

Any help on how to solve this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards
Ibrahim

My first thought was that it was spyware too but sounds like that's not the
issue. When the internet is connected, are system resources (CPU, RAM, etc.)
being hogged? You can monitor this by opening the Task Manager
(Ctrl+Alt+Del). This might help to narrow down what's causing the issue.

It might also be an issue with drivers for the ethernet port (NIC). This is
common if the NIC is USB. If you don't know where to find the drivers for
the device, you can use Everest
(http://lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1) to find the
device's properties and let us know so we can help you find the drivers.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. There is no unusal activities when i connect to the
internet and my memory is not used heavily. Just 5 to 10% cpu usage even
after i connect. So, i think there should be something else that is happening
within XP which I am not able to identify.

Also I do not have any ports connected to the USB.

It looks as if windows is waiting for some response and then timing out.
Can't figure what exactly it is timing out on.

Do you mean that i should reinstall the drivers for ethernet port because it
might be corrupted.?

Thanks
Ibrahim
