Problems to open programs from link

After installing IE7, I am no longer able to open programs from links.
Neither am I able to open attatchments in Hotmail. Anyone know how to solve
this problem, so I don't have to return to the old to IE6?

I am 60 years of age and I have only shallow knowledge of what is deep
inside a PC. I was not able to interprete your suggestion for a solution. Is
it possible to explain in more detail how I can get my IE7 to operate the
same way as my IE6? Do I have to install ALL the links on the page you
suggested? Or....?
