problems sending fax using "Fax Console Version 5.1"

Jordan Van Voast

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to send faxes using software
(Fax Console Version 5.1) instead of using hardware (hp
officejet v40).

I keep getting error messages when I try to send a fax
this route. (Using hardware I have now problem sending
and receiving faxes).

First, when I try to preview the fax The Send Fax Wizard
tells me "the fax preview cannot be displayed".

Then, after I click finish, a few seconds later, I am
told "no dial tone, the phone line is in use or not
connected."

But I am not on the phone when I get this message, and
sending faxes using the hp officejet v40 (feeding a
hardcopy through the fax feed, etc.) works just fine.

Any ideas?
Thank you,

Jordan Van Voast

You're not on a phone line?
How were you expecting to send a fax?

I think you've misinterpreted what I wrote - or I am not
understanding your answer. As I mentioned, my fax machine
(the hardware) is hooked up to the phone line and works
just fine. Perhaps I am mistaken, but I thought that
there is a way (e.g. Microsoft Fax Console Version 5.1)
to send faxes using software only, without having to
waste paper (e.g. printing out a document and then
feeding it through a fax and hitting a bunch of buttons).
Are you with me so far?

However, I get the abovementioned error message when
trying to do this. I believe that my fax machine is
plugged into the back of the PC so if that fax machine is
connected to the phone line, that means the PC is
connected also. Right? So then why the error message?

Thanks for your help,

Jordan

Like all PC based fax software, Windows XP Fax can only be used with an
analog fax modem hooked directly to a voice line. It cannot be the front end
to a third party fax machine.

I think I understand. I can see that there are no phone
lines directly connected to my computer (which is what
the error message was trying to tell me). Thanks for your
help,
