Problems reading CD and Zip drives

B

Bob

Help! I'm a computer idiot and I've got a problem I
cannot figure out. Whenever I try to access my CD drives,
my Zip drive, or my camera, I get the following
message: "[Drive Letter]:\ is not accessible. Incorrect
function."

I've loaded and reloaded all the correct drivers, but to
no avail. The only drive I can access is my camera, if I
right click and hit 'Open', but none of my other drives
will let me access them at all. Any suggestions?

Please e-mail above or to (e-mail address removed).

Thank you!:)

- Insert your Win2000 CD into your CD drive
- Launch "My Computer" or "Windows Explorer"
- What do you see?

Unfortunately, this is my home system and my Win2000 disk
is at my office, so I'll have to try tomorrow. But, since
my system won't read any of my drives, will I even be able
to see anything? Thanks for the help - greatly
appreciated.

I'm trying to find out if your CD drive is capable of reading
any original CDs. So far you did not mention if the problem
is restricted to copies of original CDs or if it extends to
original CDs.

I also recommend that you boot your machine with a Win98
boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. If you can read your
CDs when booting from this disk then you have a Windows
problem. If you still can't read the CDs then you have
a problem with your CD drive: Perhaps a cable that has
come adrift, or a defective CD drive.

is at my office, so I'll have to try tomorrow. But, since
my system won't read any of my drives, will I even be able

This can sometimes be a side effect of Norton "Autoprotect" Try
disabling Autoprotect and see if the drive become accessible.

.Pegasus: I've done as you suggested and I still get the
same error message. I can see the drives (through
both "My Computer" and "Windows Explorer"), but when I try
to access them (in any manner), I get "D:/ is in
accessible. Incorrect function." message. Any other
suggestions? Please e-mail me directly at
(e-mail address removed). Thank you.

Sorry, you'll have to make the effort to read replies in this
newsgroup. I don't believe in personal responses to EMail
addresses.

You need to determine if your problem is caused by Windows
or by your hardware. Boot your machine with a Win98 boot
diskette from www.bootdisk.com, then see if you can read
some original CD. If you can then the problem is caused by
Windows. If you can't then you have a hardware problem.
