What happened to "RENAME" (For CD Drive)?

C

casey.o

I installed a second harddrive with two partitions. My CD drive used to
be Drive H: Now it's Drive J:. I: thru L: used to be a card reader
(for camera cards), which I had labeled each one as "Card Read".

Drive J: is now my CD drive. But it's still labeled as "Card Read".

When I'm in MY COMPUTER, and I right click on the HDD partitiions and
the card readers, there is a RENAME option. But when I click on the CD
drive, there is no option to rename it. WHY NOT? How can I change this
to "CD Drive", not "Card Read"?

I sure cant understand XP sometimes, this should be just as simple as
renaming any other drive, but apparently MS made a stupid exception for
reasons I'll never understand.

This must be done through the Disk Management Tool see detail

I believe casey is asking how to change the name of the drive, not the
drive letter. :)

--

Yea, I can easily change the drive letter with Partition Magic. I can
also rename drives using P.M., but not the CD drives. But no program is
needed to rename HDD partitions or flash drives. floppies, etc.

That thread shows my same problem, but dont explain how to fix it.
About the only thing it does is confirm I need to hack it (somehow),
because there is no rename options. Just another example of of MS's
idiotic bullshit, which takes control away from the users of its'
software. This kind of crap seems to get worse in every new version of
Windows. If I recall, I could rename the CD drive in Win98, but I have
not had a CD drive on that computer for at least 5 years. Anything
needing to be installed to Win98 from a CD, I just copy the CD to a
flash drive on my laptop, and I have both the Win98 and Win2000 CDs
copied right to the harddrive.

Ok, I solved this myself. I went into the registry using Regedit. I
searched for "Card Read". I found it for the CD drive. I used the
MODIFY and renamed it to "CD Drive". Finally........
What a stupid setup and hassle just to do a simple thing that should be
available right from My Computer..... But at least that's fixed.

I can't see why a stock XP install would ever call a CD drive as a card
read(er), regardless of the drive letter assigned. And changing it to
report something else requires hacking the registry. And I see no need
for most to be doing this anyway. Because if you don't know what you are
doing, you can really screw things up.

I changed one of my machines on a netbook with 4GB SSD soldered on the
motherboard. So you can't upgrade it without lots of work. I did have a
16GB flash card in the SDHC slot, but Windows and some software
installations won't install on a removable flash drive. So I hacked the
registry so it was seen as a non-removable drive. Then everything was
happy to use this drive to install applications on.

Later I changed the registry hacking back to stock and then used the
NTFS mounted folder option. As I moved everything in the Program Files
folder to the flash drive. So anything wanting to read and write to
"C:\Program Files" ended up reading and writing to the flash drive
instead. And this seemed to work very well.

Read my original post again.

In summary, I added another HDD. First HDD C: thru G:
CD drive H:
CARD READERS (4 of them) I: thru L:

--------------

The NEW HDD used up H: and I:

Thus, the CD was moved to J:
J: was formerly called "Card Read"
Although J: was now the CD drive, it retained the name "Card Read"
XP refused to let me change the name on J: (CD drive) But did let me
change it on HDD I:.

The card readers were moved to K: thru N:

--------------

Anyhow, I did fix it in the registry. I know it's dangerous to tinker
with the registry, but I have done lots of this in Win98, and the
registry adn regedit are one of the few things that are pertty similar
in XP.

Since all I was doing was changing a few words related to that drive, I
knew I could do it. It's fine now.

By any chance, did you put a CD in the drive at all before you edited
the registry? It would have been interesting to know if the name
changed as per the article, and what the name was after you removed the CD.

Yes, a music CD. It showed the CD name. I played a few songs, removed
it, and the name Card Read reappeared. Thats when I went to the
registry.

Sorry my bad! However, there was a site that had all kinds of tweaks
for XP, named Kellys Korner, but unfortunately, it has closed down.
The site has been archived and can still be access from this link:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Just click on any highlighted date to open the site page and go down
the list to Item 191 "Change CD/RW, DVD Name in Explorer"

You may want to download and archive a few tweaks of your own before
this one also vanishes :)

Thanks, casey, I was curious how your XP installation would react.

I was curious myself.
That name "Card Read" was clearly labeled inside the registry with the
drive letter appearing. I just clicked on that entry, chose "modify"
and changed the name to "CD-Drive".

The names of ALL my drives were listed in a row..... Now that I know
this, it's easy to change, but it took me hours to figure out what to
do.
