Problems downloading files

Sometime ago I installed a download manager, but decided to uninstall it.
Since then I cannot download a file from the internet by double-clicking on
the link, I just get a blank screen with a wierd icon...I have to use SAVE
TARGET AS..

Any ideas on what I need to do to regain the original functionality?

Next time you are in Internet Explorer>select Tools>Internet
Options>Security>Set Internet to Medium.
