Problems capturing/importing from AverMedia DVD EZMaker PCI

Owen Mortensen

I'm having problems capturing video from my new AverMedia DVD EZMaker PCI
card (that's a mouthful!)....

I can capture using Windows Media Player 2.1 as long as I leave the video
resolution at the default of 320X240. NOT what I want. My final destination
is DVD and I would like to capture in at least NTSC approx of 640x480, but
would rather capture to D1 approx of 720X480. However, when I pick anything
other than 320X240, Windows Movie Maker hangs (80% cpu, unresponsive UI).

I have a Dell computer with a Pentium 4 3.8GHz Hyperthreading CPU running
Windows XP Pro SP2 with 1G DDR memory at 160G RAD-0 hard-drive(s). The video
card is an NVidea GEForce 6800 GTO.

I used the video capture software that came with the AverMedia card
(something like neoDVDstandard4) and saved an MPG file to the hard drive.
However, I can't play it back with anything to see if it is any good.
Windows Media Player says it can't open it. Windows Movie Maker says is has
too many of something and it can't be opened. Any idea how I can convert
this file to wma so that Movie Maker can open it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to video capture, but not to
computers. I want to capture all my VHS and VHS-C home movies to disk and
then create chronological DVDs out of the video segments. These are my first
baby-steps toward that goal....

Thanks,
Owen
