Problems after Security Patches installed

Hi folks: I installed the latest security patches, downloaded from the
Microsoft site, yesterday and everything appeared to work normally.
Today Word takes forever to start and deleting files in Explorer is also
slow. Mozilla and other programs are OK. About a month ago I had a worse
problem after installing patches from Microsoft and had to wipe the hard
drive. Any ideas please. Thanks, Donald

This seems to be a fairly widespread problem caused by the latest Norton
AV updates. Here's Symantec's comment and workaround. Note that the url
wraps in my newsreader and you'll have to enter it into your browser's
addressbar on one line:
