Problems after dl IE6SP1 and other updates

I have a brand new laptop so i havent had chance to mess
anythying up yet! I downloaded some windows xp updates
mainly for security but also the IE updates. After this i
have sporadic problems where "cannot find server" page
comes up instead of my home page, despite the internet
connection being fine. Or when i do connect to websites i
get red crosses where pictures should be like they have
made a mistake with thier site, however if i refresh a
couple of times the pictures can sometimes appear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated this is driving me
mad !
