Problem with XP

After a while of using my laptop it comes with a small box saying something
about an error Im unable to get a screen shot as no programs will open, even
task manager.
The graphics dissappear but sometimes come back (start button, clock etc.)
and I have to re-boot to get it back to normal.

Whats the problem and how can I fix it?

Please help ASAP!

in safeboot or not..

To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click
Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer.
For information about using Event Viewer, in Event Viewer, on the Action
menu, click Help.

After a reboot, you will find the event that caused the restart.
