Problem with XP Service Pack 1

I installed XP sp1 on my Toshiba Sat. Laptop. All went well until reboot. When final screen came up only the background showed up, no icons. I rebooted in Safe mode and everthing worked. I tried to reboot in last known good config, still no good. So I removed sp1, now everything worked fine. I tried to load sp1 once more same problem. So now I have removed sp1 again. Went to Compusa they were baffled. Anyone got any ideas
 
After you install SP1, rightclick center of screen/Arrange icons by.../show disktop icons.
 
Been having lots of headaches here with a Toshiba Sat.
laptop and SP1 from the Feb 2004 Security Update CD.
System hangs and powers off part way through the set up
wizard. Hoping to find a solution soon !
