Problem With Windows Installer

D

Danny Bates

Ok ive suddenly been having these problems, every time i
try to install software that uses Windows Installer i get
this message:
Installation Terminated Prematurely
then after that:
The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a
thread exit or an application request.

Ive went through so many support websites on microsoft,
tried many fixing programs, none seem to work, ONE MS
help file even said i had a win95 virus, i tried a
removal tool but it said i didnt have it. What in the
world is going on?! i desparatly need this fixed since i
cannto install ANY software that requires Windows
Installer

Hi Danny,

Let's clean up the installer.

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to "Windows Installer" and double click
it. Stop the service if it is running, set the startup type line to
disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot.

Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

Now reverse the first set of steps and reenable the Windows Installer (You
can just set the startup type to manual). Reboot.

Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software. Use
ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

Now retry installing some software.

Ok, having a little porblem, in services when i click
stop for windows installer i get:
Could not stop service on local computer.
The service did not return an error. This could be a
windows error or an internal service error.
If the problem persists contact your system administrator.

Not good atall really :( i cleared temp files though, no
luck, any suggestions? :-(

Sorry still no luck, the same error message :-(
Im on the brink of reinstall for the 5th time, im finding
XP to be very unreliable, any other suggestions to fix it
before i re-install?

Hi,

Try expanding a new msiexec.exe file. Start/run msconfig, click on "expand
file" (general tab)

File to expand: msiexec.exe
From: X:\I386
To: %windir%\system32

Where X is whatever letter is assigned your CD drive (you need your WinXP CD
for this), change it accordingly. If your system was preinstalled, you may
find this instead on the hard drive under C:\Windows\I386. If so, change the
"from" line accordingly. Reboot when finished.

Hi Daniel,

Ok, NOW stop and restart the installer service as mentioned before.

Also, make sure you logged on with Admin priviledges AND (if using XP Pro)
check permissions on the system folder.

Hi Daniel,

And this is happening with all software right?

Do a clean boot, as there has to be something interfering with the install
process:

Hi Daniel,

Use the previously listed extraction steps to expand a new copy of that file
