I have a problem with Windows Help...

I am running Build 6000

Help in Office 2007 is fine...

The problem is with the help under 'Help and Support' from the Start menu.

The error is: Internet Explorer cannot download / from help.

Does anyone know how to fix this except by a complete system rebuild...

Thank you,
Michael

What software do you have installed on your system? I'm trying to get this
to reproduce here so I can find a way to fix it, I seen it once during the
beta phase but never did solive it.

Thanks,

I have alot of programs...

I may have to put Vista on a separate system to see which application
install caused the problem.

Thanks,
Michael

If you find out which application caused the issue please feel free to
e-mail me (remove the "nospam" bit) or reply to this thread, I'd be
interested to review your findings.

Have a great day,

I would be interested as well as I am going through the every same problem
as well.

Michael--

I'm assuming you didn't run some type of registry cleaner which I would not
use because despite their grandiose claims you don't really know what
they're doing as Ed Bott has written on well.

See if this helps help.

Try these to fix Helppane.exe (the run command for help to reach the help
server used by MSFT for Windows Vista.

Also check the MSFT Windows Vista Help Site for Reference:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/default.mspx

1) Run SFC or System File Checker by typing sfc /scannow in the run box or
at the command prompt.

2) You can run a Startup Repair from the DVD. Screenshots are here:

http://www.windowsvista.windowsreinstall.com/vistaultimate/repairstartup/part1.htm

3) You could try a System Restore via Vista or via Recovery on the DVD
(similar steps to above)

4) Configure your registry keys and values this way:

The issue is caused by an application modifying the .xml file type. By
re-associating the file type, Help and Support will open and function as
designed.

I've attached the fix to this post for simplicity however you may also
download it at

Hope this helps and have a great day,

Kristan thanks you.

I have been experiencing this problem for over three weeks. I did post a
question about this problem, but I did not get any helpful replies.

Luckily enough there are people like you about.

"Many thanks again"

Thanks to Kristan for finding this fix. In my case however other keys in the
registry where not affected the only change was omission of the Content Type
key.

Therefore I reckon the only fix need is as follows:

** BEGIN REGISTRY FIX **
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xml]
"Content Type"="text/xml"
** END REGISTRY FIX **

Copy data between the begin and end headers and open notepad. Then save the
file and call it fix_help.reg. If you then click on this file it should fix
your help problem.

This elegant fix below did the trick for me. Thank you. Based on wat you guys
are saying here I suspect installing Dreamweaver 8 was what caused the
problem for me.

Thanks Kristan.
I can confirm installing Dreamweaver 8 caused the problem when it took over
xml files.

Good work

Hi Kristan Kenney!

I have been experiencing this problem every since I upgraded my Windows XP
(Home) to Windows Vista (Ultimate). I had no clue why my Help & Support menu
wouldn't work and I was so lazy I didn't even consider for looking out on a
fix past 5 months and when I finally started the hunt, I knew the discussion
community is the best way to start with and I ran a query in search box and
got what exactly I wanted.

I am able to use Help & Support Menu now :) ! Thanks a bunch for the
registry fix!

Cheers,
Vinay

WOW!!!
YOU RULE!!!
Thats like the FIRST time I have EVER had my help and Support thingy
actually work!
And I'm even refering to after a clean Vista install! LOL

Thanx a zillion!
I'm saving this puppy, for sure! :)
