Problem with WIA

I am having some sort of a problem with the service Window Image Acquisition.
When the service is running any dropdown menu, whether in windows or IE,
locks
up for a couple of minutes and if I open up My Computer it will search for
the folders for about 2 mins before they are visible. If I stop the service
in msconfig and reboot, everything is fine. Is this service necessary??? If
so, what steps can I take to correct the problem?

Try to make the start up for this service manual not Automatic in the
services control panel.

Also run this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK] you may need your XP CD, so get it handy please.
