Although I am logged in as an administrator, I cannot download any microsoft
window updates as "access is denied " This problem has been ongoing since mid
January. Any help appreciated!

If you are using Windows XP PRO, right click My Computer, left click Manage,
go to Local Users and Groups, click on Users. Double click the account that
you normally use and then click on the Member Of tab. Administrator needs to
appear here if you are indeed the admin of the computer. If not, click Add
and then in the box labeled 'Enter the Object names to select' type
administrator then click Check names. If you typed it correctly it will
appear underlined. After that click apply, then OK. Try your updates again.

YOu could try and log in directly as the computer 'Administrator' account.
Youll need to change some setting in order to pull this off though. Go to
Control Panel, User Accounts. (While your here, make sure that your account
icon says computer admin under it) Click on 'Change the way users log on or
off' then unmark Welcome Screen and Use Fast user switching.

Now when you log off youll get a basic login prompt that is text based. Type
administrator and leave the password blank (unless one is setup). You should
be able to login and try your windows updates. Just remember what your normal
username/password is in case you need to log back in if the admin thing dont
work.

Tried what you suggested, but couldn't log in. Got error message re account
restriction. Sorry! and thank you.
