Problem with Too Many Scanners installed on Win XP Home

I have Win XP Home running with Microsoft PhotoDraw 2.0
installed, and a HP ScanJet 3400 C scanner also
installed.

When I go into Photodraw and try to scan, the options
that I have are of 3 different scanners. The other two
are swimply named "Scanner" whereas the one that works
occasionally has the name "HP ScanJet 3400C Ltx. The
ONLY one that I have is the HP ScanJet.

I have looked in the device driver area and there is only
1 scanner listed. I have also looked in the Registry of
installed programs where there is only one installed. I
have uninstalled the software for the scannner and
PhotoDraw, disconnected the scanner and then plugged it
back in. I continue to get the 3 scanners listed.

Is there any way to find out where these other scanner
ID's are coming from so that I can eliminate them??? Are
they possibly hiding somewhere in the registry. ???

If so, please advise....
Thanks in advance,
Larry H.

Hi Larry,

Boot into Safe Mode and check the device manager there to see if more than
one is listed, if so, delete them.

If not: Go to Start/Run/CMD. At the command prompt, type the following
commands and press enter after each line:

set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1
set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
start devmgmt.msc

Click the View menu and select Show hidden devices. Right click the device
you want to delete and click Properties. Click the Details tab.

Select Device Instance ID. The value of Device Instance ID is the hardware
key of the device.

For example, if you see the value is Root\Image\0000, the full hardware key
is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Image\0000

Then go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key. The data of the
Driver value is the software key of the device. Delete both the hardware
key and software key.

Note: If none of this helps, the scanners will be listed under the same
Enum key. Good luck!
