Need Help Removing a Photo Scanner

I used to have a Compaq/Lexmark multifunction device on my computer; it has
long since been replaced, software and drivers uninstalled. Gone, but not
completely.

If I go into a program like MS Word, PhotoDraw, etc., which allows me to
insert a photo from a scanner, those programs all display a pop-up window
from which I can choose which scanner I want to insert from, and that old
Compaq A1000 shows up in that list. One particular program I have assumes
only one scanner is installed and attempts to use it. Since the A1000 is
apparently at the top of the list, it gets elected, and of course is not
present so that program will not work.

Anyway, I've worked with HP/Compaq trying to get rid of this with absolutely
no luck. Apparently, there is someplace in windows where programs like this
look to for installed scanner devices info, and that area still contains the
A1000 info.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of it?

Not sure whether you have looked into the obvious:
Start > Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras

Highlight the device and hit Delete.

Another possibility is that the programs 'saved' the last used scanner and
attempts to use it again. Erasing the configuration data for the program may
work.
