Problem with sp1a

I tried to install sp1a and i kept getting crazy errors
when i restarted..i figured it was something i had on my
computer so i reformatted and did it again. Its taking
more then 20 - 30 seconds longer before i can open
anything when my desktop pops up and is going much slower.

it isnt my computer because i got athalon xp 2600+ and
got 512ram.

if anyone can tell me what to try or how to get the sp1a
without using the automatic update it would be a big help
to me.
