Problem with Shortcut?

S

Stephen Reed

For some unknown reason my CD drive and DVD drive
shortcuts to the desktop now longer work and I receive a
message saying 'The item D:\ (CD-RW Drive) and E:\ (DVD
Drive)that this shortcut refers to has been changed of
moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do
you want to delete the shortcut?'
It also says the same message to my DVD shortcut on Drive
E?

If I delete the shortcuts and re-create them they work
fine for a while and then the problem reappeares! Is
there a fix?

Thanks

Steve

Hi! Steve!

There is so much semi-innocuous malware out there, that what you are seeing
could be a teenage prank, you never know. It cannot hurt to run both Spybot
and AdAware to see if any of that kind of junk is lurking on your machine.

There is a link to the fix in the article: "To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS ". Or didn't you read that part? It hasn't changed from when I supplied the article link 3 days ago.

Yes, I caught that. I followed that link, but unfortunately for my
situation, it goes nowhere. After following the various prompts, eventually
I am informed that I have an OEM XP installation, which isn't supported by
MS. The other alternative is to phone MS and have them $35 charged to my
credit card.

I tried uninstalling 821557, but in that case I was presented with a list of
every software package on my computer with the message "If KB821557 is
removed, these programs might not run properly. Do you want to continue?"
Obviously I didn't do that.

Is there a reason that MS does not simply provide the patch from KB article
824143?

Hi Brent,

Removing the patch with or without the warning message(s) won't help anyway.
It doesn't change a thing.

It changed everything back to what it was for me. The shortcuts then worked. I reinstalled 821557 and they stopped working. That update is not currently installed on my machine. I first reported the issue about 7-18-03.

Uninstall it , try it, I had gotten the messages also (twice).

Kelly, got the update for 821557 (KB 824143) today and applied it. All shortcuts to 3 ½" drives and CDs now work. I was on hold with MS less than 10". All I asked for was the fix described in the article and received it via e-mail.

That's 2 of us, let's not tell anybody else - let 'em find the fix themselves. :)

Oh, I did reinstall 821557 after installing the fix! Windows update told me I needed it - go figure.
