Shortcut to desktop

Stephen Reed

Hi,

Win XP SP1, with all the updates.

I recently had to do a complete reinstall and now my CD-RW and DVD drive
shortcut icons to the desktop do not work and I get the
message, ' This shortcut has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no
longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?'

If I delete them from the desktop and re-create them again from My Computer
I get the same message above?

I was able to do this before and all worked fine!

Is there a fix?

Thanks

Steve

Didn't you ask this a few days ago?

How exactly do you create the shortcuts - Copy/Paste Shortcut or Drag n
Drop, or New Shortcut Wizard. Try the other two ways.

Yes he did David on 10-2-2003, and my reply was "Uninstall update 821557. They will now work. MS know about it. There is a fix, search the KB."

So he doesn't have to work to find it the link is:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;824143.

I reported the error about 7-18-2003, 821557 was the culprit.

Google showed he got no replies. And there was no certainty that any reply
would be visable to any particular person (incl Google - due to server
problems). But I was sure I had seen his post answered.

Yet again Windows Update destroys a computer.

Hi

He has multi-posted his question...

In one of them, he got no response, in the two others he got an answer from Jeff
("mrtee"):

Hi

This error is introduced with the security update 821557 (MS03-027). If you
don't want to uninstall 821557, you can call Microsoft to obtain a fix:

Desktop Shortcut to the 3 1/2 Inch Disk Drive or to the CD-ROM Drive Does Not
Work
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;824143

<quote>
SYMPTOMS
On your Windows XP desktop, when you click the shortcut to your 3 1/2 inch disk
drive or to your CD-ROM drive, the shortcut does not work anymore.

CAUSE
This problem may occur if you have installed Windows XP update 821557: MS03-027:

An Unchecked Buffer in the Windows Shell Could Permit Your System to Be
Compromised or Windows XP update 330836: Shortcuts to Mapped Drives on Windows
95 or Windows 98 May Not Work in Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft...

As the article states, you need to call Microsoft Product Support Services to
obtain it (outside the US, customers should contact their local Microsoft
subsidiary.). The support call will be be free as long as you refer to the
Knowledge Base Article number (Q823050) and ask for nothing more.

And that should of course be Q824143 and not Q823050...

Thanks very much for the information and I think I will wait for the SP2
update as now I know what is causing the problem there is no immediate
concern to contact Microsoft to get a fix now!
Yes I did earlier post to the news group about this problem and got no
replies, good job I reposted and have now got the answer!

Thanks again
