problem with POP3

Guest

I tried to configure Outlook 2003 for POP3 access to my Exchange Server which
is behind an ISA server btw.
I'm able to access on an internal Outlook client with no problems when I
give the mail server setting as a internal ip.

But when I give the mail server setting as the IP address of the external
interface of the ISA server, it stops working.
as in , when i perform Test Settings in Accounts. , the servers are found,
but they do not respond.
I've tried googling this error, but could find no proper resolution

And the funny thing is the same settings work perfectly for Outlook Express.

Hope someone can find the solution.

Thanks in advance

And you are trying this on a computer outside your LAN?

sir,

Thank you for replying.

No, I am accessing from inside my LAN.

I hope I can explain my n/w situation as clear as I can

One ADSL router which has a static IP

This is connected to external interface of ISA.

the internal interface of ISA is connected to my LAN.

the Exchange server is on internal LAN.

I hope this is enough

tahnx in advance again

Alright, but I fail to see the added value of accessing your Exchange server
internally through an external addres. What is the purpose of doing this?

Actually, I was facing another problem.
There is another network on the same router which was using our exchange
server
When the exchange server was kept in the external network, they were able to
use the server via POP3 with no problems.

Now since it is internal, their access point is only through the external
interface of ISA.

So , to duplicate the situation, i tried performing the procedure which the
people in the external networks were following, i.e., providing the address
of the external interface of ISA as the mail server address.

Ok, but since you are on the internal network using the external IP address
is not the way to go. If you want to use the external address you are making
it available to the Internet so you must publish your Exchange server in ISA
and you should test things from outside your internal network. After that
you may or may not want set filters on which external address can actually
make a connection to the Exchange server.

Another way to go would be to provide VPN access to the Exchange server or
when you have Exchange 2003 running you may want to opt for RPC over HTTP
instead.

I hope I understood your network configuration clearly.

Thats it exactly. I've already published the Exchange Server in ISA
And its working fine from any external network, i.e, those which are outside
the router.

But the point you made about filters, I did not understand very clearly.
Probably this could be the cause of the problem.

RPC over HTTP is also enabled. But unfortunately, it is also affected by the
same problem.

Well the filters are for restrictions. For instance if you only want clients
from a specific subnet to access the Exchange server. If you don't have
these restrictions set; don't worry about it.

So you've got a single router which has 1 or multiple external address and
routes traffic between at least one internal subnet and one external
address? This subnet also hosts an Exchange server. In addition the router
acts as a hub for another internal subnet? You want it to have configured in
such a way the two subnets can communicate directly with eachother through
the router so that you can access each others resources like the Exchange
server. Am I correct in this network setup?

In that case you'll need to check your router configuration and see if there
is a route added from one internal subnet to the other internal subnet. The
external address doesn't come into play here as there is no need to route
the information over the Internet. If the router is configured correctly you
should be able to ping to each others network resources (servers, clients,
network printers etc) by using internal addresses only.
