Problem with network share connecting (on win98) after server re-build.

We allow some of our remote employee's to VPN into the office and then
share a network drive like it is on there system locally.

Well the last time we did this was 2+ years ago (W2k Sp1 time frame
when we set it up) and it was easy. They VPN'd in from remote office
or home (MS pptp using 128 security) and did a net use \\server\share
and got to the share on the server they vpn'd into via there win 98
systems.

Now that we had to rebuild the server because of HD crash when these
same people attempt to connect to new server they are being prompted
for IPC$ password. In fact if they connect to the old server (and I
remake the share onto a still working drive) they can connect. But
remove the network share and try and recreate that share again as a
new drive letter and I get screwed with the prompt for the
\\server\IPC$ password prompt.

Details: Server is W2k SP4 (Old is a w2k server that was also at SP4
). They VPN directly connects to this server and connecting to the
share located on the server they VPN'd into. Username/Password are
all local to this box only (i.e. server is in a domain but they only
have server local accounts not domain accounts).

This worked fine and in fact we got the old system up and they can
connect to the old system (But the data drive is no longer on that
server) but can't duplicate the same thing on this new server. In
fact now if they remove the saved connection to the old server and
attempt to recreate it, it fails prompting for the IPC$ password.

I know sp2-sp4 increased security but how do I get non-domain
registered Win 98 system to gain access to something they had access
to last week.

Network share right are allowing everybody and so does the physical
folder security currently. I removed all restrictions till I can
figure this out as I didn't want that getting into the mix.

Win 98 systems are either part of external domain or none at all as
they are stand alone home systems.

I need to get this working as one remote VP is pissed that he can't
get access to any of his saved folder info.

Please help

The message you are seeing indicates that there is not a user account on the W2K
machine that matches the logon name/password that the user is using to logon to their
W98 machines for Microsoft Networking. Create user accounts on the computers offering
the shares. See the link below for more details. --- Steve
