unable to connect win95 to win2k server

Raj Khandelwal

I have a domain controller running Active Directory at the
headquarters. I can logon to that server from win95
workstation and access all the shares and printers of that
server but can not connect to another win2k server (at the
local site) that is also acting as a domain controller. I
can see it in the network neighborhood but when try to
connect, it prompts for password for ipc$ share. Any help
will be greately appreciated
Thanks,
Raj

Got WINS installed on the server?
Options 044 and 046 (0x8) in DHCP-server, Scope options?

It's not wins, it's your permissions. You're finding the server ok but you
don't have the correct permissions. Try logging on to win95 with a username
& password you know work for the domain and try again. If that doesn't
work, it's probably a security feature of the domain controller which you
can reduce the security through group policy but better to upgrade your
win95 client (look for things like updated NTLM, dcom and directory services
client dsclient).

Thanks for the reply.....I can't figure out exactly what's
wrong with this...... It doesn't seem like the access
restrictions. I have tried to login with admin account
also without any success. I do have wins installed. I can
access the win95 from the server. I can access this server
from win2k workstations with my account but not from
win95. I can access other win2k servers in the domain from
this win95 pc. It seems like something on this server
that's preventing access to win95 client. but can't figure
out.
Thanks,
Raj

You do see the domainbox at the loginscreen, right?
Does the ipconfig/all (or winipcfg) show that everything is pointing to the
server-IP?

Apply the dsclient install to your win95 client off the windows server CD
then reboot and try to connect. It's probably the version of NTLM that the
DC is rejecting and installing dsclient will update the NTLM version on
win95.

Yes Marina,
I can log into the network without any issues, It's just
this one server that doesn't let me access it.
Thanks,

Thanks Again!, I'll apply the dsclient and let you know.
Only concern is that then why would it let me access other
win2k servers. All the servers were installed around the
same time.
Thanks,
Raj

Hi Raj,

How many servers do you have? WINS is installed on the server(s), right?

When you promote a windows 2000 server to a domain controller it tightens
the security (doesn't let normal users log on, etc.). So when the win95
client it connecting to the other servers it's fine but when it tries to
authenticate to the DC it's failing because of the tighter security. IPC$
is inter process communications hidden share so it's connected but being
denied access somewhere.

Also, enabling the guest account on servers will usually get around this but
it's not wise to do.

Do some studying on security templates and security config & analysis and
you'll find the answer.

Hope this helps!

Hi Raj,

Can you give us the ipconfig/all from those 3 servers and the W95
(winipcfg)?
