Hi

Just formatted a dell pc, installed xp pro and connected with a sbs 2003
domain. Everything works fine except the v5 ms update for security patches.
When I select the update type (express or custom) the system just keeps
checking for updated for ever. I have tried upto 15 minutes which is a lot
more than other PCs on the network take. If I then try to end task, the
system just does not want to let go and I need to turn off the PC from power
switch. I re-formatted and re-installed win xp pro but with the same result.

What is wrong and how can I fix this?

Thanks

Regards

The following helped and I am posting it for others.

I've run into this as well. See if this helps...

Update package that includes Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
version 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842773

+ Download BITS/WinHTTP 5.1 from the KB above and manually install it to
the workstation. If it wants to remove BITS first, let it; then reinstall
BITS again.
+ Reboot the workstation
+ Go to the WU and, if it prompts to install updates to make your machine
compatible with WU ver 5, let it have its way and install the BITS 2.0 and
the WinHTTP 5.1 update again

Once this is done, WU should work like its supposed to.
